Whispers of the LORD
Honor your Parents?
The scriptures I am using for my question are Exodus 20:12 “Honor your father and your mother that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your GOD is giving you”. And Ephesians 6:4 “Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instructions of the Lord”. My question is. How do you honor your parents when they bring you up in the way of the LORD? I am going to answer this question in two parts with scripture. First what does honor mean?
The Merriam – Webster dictionary says Honor, Homage, Reverence, deference means respect and esteem shown to another. Honor may apply to the recognition of one’s right to great respect or to any expression of such recognition. So how do you respect and show esteem and recognition to your parents for bringing you up in the way of the LORD? Second how do parents bring children up in the way of the LORD? Deuteronomy 6:6-7 says “And you must commit yourselves wholeheartedly to these commands that I am giving you today. Repeat them again and again to your children. Talk about them when you are at home and when you are on the road, when you are going to bed and when you are getting up”. Ephesians 5:1 – 2 Says “Imitate GOD, therefore, in everything you do, because you are his dear children. Live a life filled with Love, following the example of Christ. He loved us and offered himself as a sacrifice for us, a pleasing aroma to GOD”. Back to the question. How do you Honor your parent when they bring you up in the way of the LORD? I am going to answer this question in two parts with scriptures for each part.
My answer for the first part is GOD’s instructions about honor and esteem.
Colossian 3:20 says. “Children obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord”. Titus 2:7 says “And you yourself must be an example to them by doing good works of every kind. Let everything you do reflect the integrity and seriousness of your teaching”. 1 Thessalonians 5:12-13 says. “Dear brothers and sisters, honor those who are your leaders in the Lord’s work. They work hard among you and give you spiritual guidance. Show them great respect and wholehearted love because of their work. And live peacefully with each other”. The second part is scripture that reflects how I am going to live my life. Proverbs 1:8-9 says. “My child listen when your father corrects you. Do not neglect your mother’s instruction. What you learn from them will crown you with grace and be a chain of honor around your neck.” Proverbs 13:1 a says. “A wise child accepts a parent’s discipline.” Leviticus 20:7-8 says. “So, set yourselves apart to be holy, for I am the LORD your GOD. Keep all my decrees by putting them into practice, for I am the LORD who makes you holy”.
I have two scriptures that I am going to use to answer on how to live my life with.
Acts 5:29 says. “But Peter and the apostles replied, we must obey GOD rather than any human authority.” Deuteronomy 6:6-8 says. “And you must commit yourselves wholeheartedly to these commands that I am giving you today. Repeat them again and again to your children. Talk to your children. Talk about them when you are at home and when you are on the road, when you are going to bed and when you are getting up. Tie them to your hands and wear them on your forehead as reminders”.
My question for society is Do you know the way of the LORD?
My prayer is. Oh, Heavenly Father look over all parents as they raise up their children. Give them your laws to teach time. Give them your grace when they make mistakes. Be with their children. Let the children of this world know your LOVE. Show me and this world your truth. Help me show honor to my parent with everything I do.
AMEN.
About Me
I am creating this page to Honor my parents for raising me up in the way of the Lord.
I was born and raised in small town Iowa. I was the only girl with 3 brothers. (side note 4 brothers). I was blessed with parents that made sure I knew who GOD was. Growing up I always knew the driving force of church every Sunday and Christmas eve mass was my dad. Duaine Wend was his given name. When his parents had him baptized the priest said Duaine was not a Catholic name. So, they called him Mark. Most of my childhood I knew my dad as Mark. This year (2020) when my dad died the police thought there was a problem when they checked his SS number and his ID. This story will make me smile the rest of my life.
I got married when I was 17. Had 3 kids. My marriage is like any others with its ups and downs. Today because of the grace of GOD we are still married. Because of my Dad’s driving force to make sure I knew who GOD is, I was baptized as a baby, and went to Church every week until I got married. As I was raising my kids GOD placed it on my heart to make sure my kids knew GOD. Throughout my life GOD placed questions on my heart. I never started seeking the answers until the past few years. The first question GOD placed on my heart was when I was in 2nd grade. GOD answered the question during a bible study when I was in my 50’s. Even though I was raised going to church regularly I did not do any Bible studies until I was 49. That is when more questions started whispering in my soul. And I started to ask questions like Where is that in the Bible? Does the Bible really say that? The Holy Spirit made me dig into the Bible for the answers. The more I did Bible studies and dug for answers the more JOY GOD gave me. The Holy Spirit compelled me to start sharing my questions at my church. Then 2020 and COVID-19 -19 happened. We could not go to church for several weeks. As I sat at home on Sunday morning missing church and digging for questions to share at church, GOD placed it on my heart to share my questions on the internet. 6 months later I am starting this page. Someone told me just do it even it you are scared. The past few years I have been grateful that my Dad made sure that I knew GOD. When my Dad died this year, I knew I had to start this page to honor him.
As I write each question on this page, I want to honor my parents for raising me up in the way of the LORD. I don’t claim to be an expert about what the Bible says. The Holy Spirit lead me to answer the questions in my soul with a scripture. My goal with my questions on this page is to answer questions with scripture.
